Malaysia introduces 1 year Golden Visa

The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) has launched the Malaysia Golden Visa, also known as the Investor Pass. This marks an important milestone in the rapidly expanding investment migration landscape of Southeast Asia. Unlike traditional and often cumbersome visa systems, the Investor Pass is designed to be fast, clear and strategically structured. It is intended for serious entrepreneurs and investors, not for tourists or retirees.

What is the Malaysia Golden Visa?

The Malaysia Golden Visa differs from programmes that require substantial property investments or long-term bank deposits. Instead, it offers a business-first entry route for entrepreneurs looking to establish, manage or expand a business in Malaysia.

The Investor Pass provides a stay of up to twelve months, divided into an initial six-month period with the option of a six-month extension. Processing times are short: five working days once all documents are complete. Applicants must demonstrate active business involvement. You must therefore be a key decision-maker, such as a CEO, founder, or investor, who contributes to Malaysia’s economic development.

Why choose Malaysia?

Malaysia’s economy is growing, and the government is reforming immigration policies to attract investors. The Investor Pass aligns with Malaysia’s goal of becoming the most attractive investment hub in ASEAN.

Strategic Advantages

  1. Central location in Southeast Asia, close to major trade routes
  2. Competitive operating costs for manufacturing, logistics, and digital services
  3. English-speaking workforce and a conducive business environment

Structure of the Investor Pass

The programme covers three categories of investors:

  1. New Investors
  2. Pipeline Investors (currently in negotiations or awaiting feedback from MIDA)
  3. Existing Investors

A One-Year Sandbox

The Investor Pass serves as a twelve-month sandbox period during which investors can explore markets, develop partnerships and shape expansion strategies. The first six months are dedicated to exploration; the extension is granted based on demonstrable progress. This can also serve as a stepping stone toward MM2H (Malaysia My Second Home) or PVIP (Premium Visa Programme).

Application Procedure

The process includes:

  1. Eligibility assessment
  2. Collection of required documentation
  3. Obtaining the MIDA support letter
  4. Submission
  5. Approval within five working days
  6. Arranging arrival, visa stamping, and banking matters
  7. Establishing activities during the first six months
  8. Applying for extension with proof of progress

Checklist for a successful application

  1. Define your investment objectives
  2. Have documentation reviewed in advance
  3. Gather relevant corporate documents
  4. Prepare an investment plan aligned with MIDA’s priorities
  5. Submit the application
  6. Plan relocation and banking arrangements
  7. Maintain complete documentation
  8. Evaluate progress after six months

The programme distinguishes itself through speed, low cost, and a focus on tangible economic value creation. It offers a forward-looking alternative to regions that are becoming increasingly restrictive. For more information on visas and investment opportunities in ASEAN, you can contact Nomair van Wijk.
